EMMA'S ART KITS
Emma’s Art Kits was created by 16-year-old Emma Stumpf who has been fighting brain cancer since the age of 7. During her many stays at the hospital, she found art as a way to express how she felt during her cancer journey. Between surgical procedures and treatments, there were days when Emma was too sick or vulnerable to leave her bed to visit the art room in the hospital. It was then that she developed the idea to ensure that all kids who were sick had an art kit right in the hospital room with them, and with the assistance of her school art teacher, Emma’s Art Kits were created.
The first few years resulted in some amazing work at Riley Hospital for Children where nearly 1,000 kits had been delivered to children within the hospital. With the recognition gained from her great work, Emma was nominated for and awarded a local Jefferson Award, and then subsequently awarded the national Jefferson Award given to ordinary people who do extraordinary things without expectation of recognition. As a part of her award, the Jefferson Awards Foundation supported her efforts for a period of one year and throughout 2017, Emma’s Art Kits were distributed to 13 hospitals across the United States.
To date Emma’s Art Kits are now being distributed in Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital in addition to Riley Hospital for Children, with plans to begin distribution within Eskenazi Health, Community Health Network, Franciscan Health and Hendricks Regional Health in 2018. In the following years to come, it is Cancer Support Community’s vision to expand the reach even further and implement Emma’s Art Kits nationwide.
